Job Description

Registered Nurse – Operation Theatre will:

  • Be responsible for providing and coordinating patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions, and providing advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
  • Assess and identify patients’ needs and implement and monitor the patient’s medical plan and treatment. They will work with a team of physicians and other health care specialists or allied health in various settings
  • Perform systematic patient assessment and collect pertinent data about the patient’s health or situation.
  • Understand and analyze the assessment information and data
  • Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues
  • Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient’s planned care
  • Create and evaluate patient care plans with the medical team
  • Record vital signs, recognize and address abnormalities
  • Define the care plan in collaboration with the healthcare team, patients, and families.
  • Maintain and update the technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice
  • Employ strategies to promote patients’ health and a safe environment.
  • Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory exams
  • Perform essential life support
  • Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment
  • Administer medications and monitor patients for any side effects and reactions
  • Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for any reactions
  • Provide wound care management
  • Ensure that all equipment used in the clinical areas is safe to use and all in working order. Reports any defaults to the Nurse In-Charge and Biomedical Department appropriately
  • Assist in medical procedures invasive or non-invasive as needed
  • Facilitate the process of safe patient`s admission and discharge
  • Provide high quality nursing care and safe clinical practice to patients undergoing day stay procedures in accordance with legal, ethical, cultural safety and professional standards.
  • Provide professional empathetic care to patients, explain procedures to them, and provide support and reassurance.
  • Perform pre-procedure assessments, coordinate nursing care, formulate patient care plans, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Prepare the procedure room ensuring the correct supplies, medication, equipment, and instruments are set up and prepared for use and all equipment is in a clean and safe condition.
  • Ensure all monitoring equipment is fully calibrated prior to use.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems, clearly complete appropriate documentation, and raise any equipment faults with the OT Manager.
  • Assist the Anesthetist and Surgeon and undertake procedures and skills in a competent and safe way.
  • Recognize recurring patterns related to patient assessment, monitoring and patient responses; demonstrate ability to problem solve based on the data gathered and refer appropriately to changes in the patient’s status.
  • Perform proper aseptic techniques, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.
  • Provide IV cannulation and venipuncture as required.
  • Administer interventions, treatments and medications within legislation, codes and scope of practice, and according to authorized prescription and our established policy and guidelines.
  • Adhere to health and safety protocols relating to safe administration and disposal of drugs.
  • Accurately record information in a timely manner.
  • Undertake correct post-procedure disinfection processes, care and handling of equipment, ensuring all used equipment is disposed of, decontaminated or sterilized as appropriate, and all areas are cleaned.
  • Perform admission, recovery, discharge and transfer functions; coordinate with ancillary and support services as required.
  •  Provide post-procedure information and instruction to patients, their  and/or support person.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Utilise nursing interventions to reduce risks and complications.
  • Report any adverse incidents or complaints.
  • Maintain a flexible approach to situations and demonstrate the ability to address multiple priorities.
  • Monitor consumables and ensure appropriate stock levels are maintained.
  • Provide back up support for the Theatre Sterilizing Unit as required, including scope cleaning and micro-testing.
  • Performs and assists in performing specific Nursing procedures which include but not limited to:
  • Blood transfusion
  • Blood extraction and IV insertion
  • Positioning
  • suctioning
  • Pre and post-operative care
  • Wound dressing
  • Arranges for diagnostic and therapeutic service as ordered.
  • Follows the ten-medication administration protocol and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Assembles patient chart and attached required forms.
  • Adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilize appropriate pain management techniques.  Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Consults physician when necessary.
  • Schedules appointment and arranges for patient transportation in other department for care of services.
  • Ensure that the equipment is clean and in good working condition prior to use.
  • Maintains controlled and narcotic drugs.
  • Completes unit forms and registers.
  • Gathers required statistics and prepares reports as required.
  • Places charges in the system.
  • Observes proper technique in the performance of all duties.
  • Makes patients rounds, evaluates patient condition.

Qualifications

  • Have an appropriate license to work as a nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority (DHA) with all the qualification and experience this mandates.
  • Manage their own professional revalidation
  • Have basic life support qualification (within past 24 months)
  • Have an active interest in the clinical field in which they are employed
  • Be willing to work across departments when necessary
  • Be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written)
